What are the best resume formats for freshers & experienced and how to make them?

The CV or resume is the first and most critical start to apply for any job. Whether on one or more pages, you need to write telling about yourself in the maximum way with the minimum of words in line with the job you apply for. Basically, the resumes are chronological, functional and hybrid. In present times, resumes are info-graphic. Irrespective of the format, the key to grab attention is when your cv/resume is out of the box meaning that it ought to be with the right words matching yourself with your talents and skills and optimized to be ATS-scannable.

The basic difference is as shown in the picture below:

Understanding the basics

Different formats and terms are used for different job proposals. Many are not aware of the difference between a Bio-Data, CV and Resume.

Biodata:

Bio-data stands for Biographical data and is an archaic term for Resume or C.V. In a bio data, the focus is on personal particulars like date of birth, gender, religion, race, nationality, residence, marital status, and the like. A chronological listing of education and experience comes after that.

C.V. – CURRICULUM VITAE

Curriculum Vitae is a Latin word meaning “course of life”. It is more detailed than a resume and can run in several pages(more than one) depending on the job specifications.

Resume

Resume is a French word meaning “summary”. A resume is an outline or summary of one’s education, skills and employment. It does not list down all details of a profile, but showcases specific skills customized to the target job.

For example: Let’s say that you work for Funky Pizza where you are a waiter/waitress. When you are filling your online application, in the job description you may write:

Waitress – Funky Pizza

take pizza orders,

bring pizza and drinks to the table,

clear dirty dishes,

bring the bill and take the money.

Now close your eyes and imagine this person: he/she sounds bored with her job, doing it mechanically and describing only the physical actions involved. He/She doesn’t sound like he/she likes his/her job. You may also write in a better way:

Waitress – Funky Pizza

  • welcome customers to the restaurant and show them to their seats
  • present the menu options and make recommendations based on chef’s daily brief
  • deliver the order and check customer satisfaction with the dishes
  • ask for feedback and additional orders
  • handle the payment using cash, credit card or coupons
  • farewell the guests and express desire for business continuation
  • tidy up the area and prepare for next customers

Once again, close your eyes and imagine this person. He/She is enjoying. smiling, welcoming and knowledgeable. Which one would you consider more professional and a happy worker? You may also write this, still in a better way:

Waitress – Funky Pizza June 2018 – to present

This shows that he/she is organized as well.

Next is the structure and content along with the format of the resume. See these 3 resumes with the format:
